New Downtown YMCA On Market, Not Waco
The Greater Wichita Y-M-C-A will NOT build a new downtown branch on city-owned property on North Waco Street. The Y-M-C-A had looked at replacing its downtown branch at 402 North Market with a new building at 1st Street and Waco. But construction at the site proved too complicated and expensive, says Tom Lasater, president of the Wichita Metro Y-M-C-A Board of Directors. Instead, the organization will build a new facility at its current site - constructing the new building on the parking lot and eventually tearing down the old structure that first opened in 1958. Lasater says a final cost for the project hasn't been determined but that it would run 18 to 20 million dollars.
