Wichita Man Dies in Motorcycle Accident

A Wichita man became the city’s 12th traffic fatality on Friday afternoon following a collision between a mini-SUV and a motorcycle near Harry & Webb.

Police officers were called to the scene of an injury crash at approximately 12:06 p.m. on Friday, June 26th. They found a motorcycle had struck a Mazda Tribute, ejecting the driver of the motorcycle. Witnesses told officers a 53-year-old man was driving the Tribute northbound on Webb Rd. and turned westbound into the east entrance of the Dillon’s Store located on the northwest corner of Harry St. and Webb.

Witnesses to the accident said traffic was backed up on Webb and stopped at the red light. However, they told officers vehicles had stopped in the center and left-turn lanes to leave room for vehicles to turn into the Dillon’s parking lot entrance. The driver of the motorcycle, 27-year-old Michael P. Hund of Wichita, was riding his motorcycle southbound on Webb in the right turn lane when he struck the front passenger door and fender with his motorcycle as the driver of the Tribute was attempting to turn into the Dillon’s parking lot. Following the crash, Hund’s motorcycle caught fire, and the witnesses pulled him away from his motorcycle and extinguished the blaze. Hund was taken by ambulance in very critical condition to Wesley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 12:59 p.m.

At this time no charges have been filed in the case. The investigation into the crash continues.

This is Wichita's second motorcycle death of 2009.
