WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Sedgwick County's chief judge says budget problems could force the county's courts to nearly shut down one week a month. Chief Judge James Fleetwood told county commissioners on Wednesday that he's preparing a plan to furlough all court employees except judges for one week each month from January to June next year. Fleetwood said the judges, who can't be furloughed because their salaries are set in the state Constitution, would work as a skelton crew to meet legal deadlines. District Attorney Nola Foulston says that the weeklong shutdowns would be "a nightmare" for the criminal justice system.
