VA Considering Wichita for Homeless Center
WICHITA, Kan (AP) - The Department of Veterans Affairs is looking at Wichita as a site for one of four new facilities for homeless veterans. The site would be at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita. A public hearing is scheduled for Monday to discuss the proposal. VA officials will conduct a market study to determine the scope of the project, including cost and how many veterans would be served. Local groups that track homeless people in Wichita estimate one in five homeless in the city are veterans. Ken Allensworth, facility planner for the medical center, said the facility could be built and operating within 18 months if there isn't any opposition.
