Johnson County to Cull Park's Deer Herd

LENEXA, Kan. (AP) - Johnson County's park and recreation board has voted to hire sharpshooters and bow hunters to reduce the deer population in Shawnee Mission Park. After a hearing Wednesday that drew more than 100 people, the board voted to use hunters to reduce the park herd from about 200 deer per square mile to 50. Park district director Michael Meadors said if the herd is not reduced, the deer will die from starvation or disease. Some area residents had complained the deer were causing accidents, damaging plants and could spread disease-carrying ticks. Opponents had asked the board to find a non-lethal option such as sterilization or relocating the deer to another area.
