Media reports say that abortion provider Dr. George Tiller has been shot and killed at his Wichita church. Tiller has been among the few U.S. physicians performing late-term abortion. His clinic has repeatedly been the site of protests for about two decades. Tiller was reportedly shot around ten a-m as he walked into services at Reformation Lutheran Church, 7601 East 13th.
Wichita Police issued a description of a possible suspect ... a white male in his 50's, balding with gray hair last seen traveling west bound on 13th in a 1993 powder blue Ford Taurus, with tag
2-2-5-B-A-B and possibly a K-State vanity plate.
Tiller has long ben a focal point of protest by abortion opponents because of his clinic on East Kellogg, where late-term abortions are performed. The clinic was the target of Operation Rescue's "Summer of Mercy" demonstrations in 1991. Tiller was shot by Rachelle Shannon at the clinic in 1993 ... wounded in both arms. Shannon remains in prison.
