Semi truck accident releases hogs in northeast KS

HIAWATHA, Kan. - A semi tractor trailer crashed Tuesday morning, releasing dozens of hogs.  It happened in northeast Kansas on U.S. 36 near Hiawatha in Brown County around 7 a.m.

Speaking with the Kansas Information Network Brown County Sheriff John Merchant says the semi trailer was carrying as many as 180 hogs when it crashed.  Merchant said a Brown County resident with a portable corral assisted emergency responders in rounding up the animals.

The Brown County Sheriff's office says an unknown number of the animals were killed in the accident.  The driver of the semi had minor injuries. U.S. 36 was closed for a time during the round up.
