More Resources Available for Victims of Sexual Assault

WICHITA, Kan.  -  Wichita State University is moving ahead of the October deadline to implement and provide more resources for students and staff regarding campus assaults.

Last month, the university released new material including staff training, brochures, and the Campus Assault Resources and Education or CARE website. The website offers resources including information about victim's rights, how to report an assault, and university policies.

"We do as much as we can to prevent any sexual assaults from happening in education," said Matthew Johnston, associate director for human resources at WSU. "But then if things that do happen, we empower our staff with the knowledge necessary to respond appropriately."

Data provided by the WSU Police Department showed a total of six reports of forcible sexual assaults on campus since 2010. There were no reports of sexual assaults last year and this year. There were two reports in 2012, one report in 2011, and three reports in 2010. In all cases, police said the perpetrators were acquaintances of the victims.

"We've made it loud and clear that we are here. The D.A.'s office has made it loud and clear that they will follow through from the beginning to the end, to take those kind of folks off the street," said Guy Schroeder, WSU Police.
