El Dorado Man Charged in Toddler's Murder, Again

EL DORADO, Kan.  -  A man has been charged with murder for a second time in connection to the death of a Kansas toddler two and a half years ago.

Justin Edwards appeared in Butler County court Friday afternoon where he was once again charged with the murder of 18-month-old Jayla Haag in El Dorado.

Haag died in March 2012, and authorities said her death was the result of abuse. A coroner said the little girl had extensive bruising, several burn scars and was missing teeth.

Edwards was charged with first-degree murder shortly after her death, but those charges were dismissed without prejudice almost two years ago. At that time, Judge David Ricke said the state did not provide sufficient evidence of the cause of death.

However, the 'without prejudice' part of the ruling left the door open for prosecutors to refile charges at a later date, as they did today.

The girl's mother, Alyssa Haag, was also arrested soon after her death and charged with first-degree murder. As part of a plea bargain, last year she pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 31 months in prison.
