SCOTT CITY, Kan. — The Bureau of Land Management is investigating the cause of death for almost five dozen horses recently transferred to a corral in Scott City. In June, nearly 1,500 mares were transferred from one pasture to another in-state facility in Scott City. By August, 57 of those horses had died. Preliminary findings from a USDA veterinarian indicate the animals died as a result of their age combined with stress from the recent relocation. So far, there is no indication of infections or contagious diseases being the cause.
