WICHITA, Kan. - Construction is starting on a $6 million facility that will ultimately be the new home for Thunderbird Tactical.
The 27,000-square-foot Thunderbird Tactical Regional Shooting Complex will be built at the southwest corner of East 28th Street and Greenwich Road. The complex will be across from the Surgicare of Wichita in that area that opened in early 2013.
The firearms training and shooting skills center will feature a 24-lane indoor shooting range, two classrooms with an attached private tactical range and a 5,000-square-foot retail pro shop.
The targeted opening for the new facility is the first quarter of 2015.
Cambiando LLC is the general contractor for the project. Simmons First National Bank is providing the financing.
In January, owner Ryan Pennock announced his plansto build a new facility in northeast Wichita.
Pennock says the new location will be a “one-stop shop” for customers to try, buy and practice using guns. Various firearms training classes, such as those required for concealed carry permits, will be offered at the site as well.
The need for firearms training has created a new - and growing - revenue stream for gun businesses.
The new facility also will give Thunderbird Tactical an in-house shooting range for the first time.
“It really completes the package for us,” Pennock says.
The business now operates out of a roughly 1,000-square-foot shop at 406 N. Seneca.
Pennock says the new facility should open in March.
