No charges filed in February shooting death on I-135 near Park City

PARK CITY - No charges will be filed in the February 7 shooting death of a woman on Interstate 135 near Park City.

Park City Police Chief Phil Bostian says an exhaustive investigation by his department, along with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office and Kansas Highway Patrol did not find sufficient evidence to present the case to the District Attorney's Office for criminal charges at this time.

On the night of February 7, Rebecca Stauder and James Scott Powers, 43, had left a concert at Hartman Arena and were traveling southbound on I-135. At around 11:44 p.m. Powers called 911 to report he had just been in an argument with his girlfriend and that she had shot herself.

Stauder was pronounced dead at the scene. Powers was later arrested on an outstanding domestic violence warrant for an incident that occurred November 20, 2013 involving Stauder at their home in northeast Wichita.

The municipal domestic violence case against Powers was dropped because of Stauder was unable to testify.
