Sedgwick Co.: $1M Healthy Babies Grant
WICHITA - Sedgwick County Commissioners have accepted a grant for a million dollars for the Healthy Babies Program, providing outreach, prevention, and intervention programs.
The grant first came up two weeks ago, but action was delayed when commissioner Richard Ranzau and others had questions about the difference between the Healthy Babies Program and the Health Start Program.
This week, Ranzau reiterated he opposes the Health Start Program: "My opposition is to the Healthy Start portion, in general, because I have a report from KU that says it's not effective."
Only a small portion of Healthy Babies funding goes to Healthy Start, so Ranzau ended up voting for Health Babies. Before doing so, he spent considerable time talking about what he called misleading and factually wrong reporting in a Wichita Eagle story on the subject.
