WICHITA - Wichita firefighters battled a two-alarm apartment fire in southeast Wichita this morning. Just after 1:30 a.m. firefighters were called to 4964 East Lincoln, near Lincoln and Oliver. Battalion Chief Joe Bickel tells KNSS News crews found a three-story, "garden style" apartment building with flames showing from the ground floor to the roof. It was nearly an hour before fire crews could report that the fire was under control. During that time Bickel says firefighters used ladders to rescue nine people from the burning building. One person suffered critical smoke inhalation, three others suffered minor injuries. The cause is under investigation. Bickel estimates damage "conservatively" at 200-thousand dollars.
