WICHITA, Kan. - In almost two years of working at the Black Diamond Pawn Shop, manager Kenny Bahkta says nobody had tried to break in until a few weeks ago.
"He didn't get anything because we have a security system," Bahkta said.
When dispatchers from his shop's security service called at 12:42 a.m. Saturday to report a burglary in process, it marked the second time in about a month.
"This time he broke the glass, opened the door, but there's a metal gate behind the door so as soon as he had opened the door the alarm went off," Bahkta said.
That alarm service, metal gate, and more than two dozen surveillance cameras are what police officers say helped them catch a suspect and make the quick arrest.
"I went to meet the officers (after getting the call) and they had already caught the guy who was trying to break into the place," Bahkta said.
Police say an officer on regular patrol heard the alarm at the pawn shop and went to take a look.
"As he was checking the business, the suspect fell from the barb wire fence he was climbing over," Bahkta said.
They caught that suspect after a brief foot chase. He had a wrench with him from the business that he was trying to use to get inside.
"Definitely good, a good job of the police department," Bahkta said.
While Bahkta thanks the police, they were also thanking him Saturday.
They say everything the business has done to protect itself helped officers to make what they say is a "good catch."
Bahkta says officers told him, the business' surveillance video even proves this is the same suspect who tried to break into the shop about a month ago.
"I think this guy was just casing us out," Bahkta said. "We have cameras, gates, security systems, and the police officers are always around the neighborhood. It helps."
