(OTTAWA) -- Prostitution is closer to becoming legal in Canada.
In a unanimous ruling, the Canadian Supreme Court said laws prohibiting keeping a brothel, making a living on prostitution, and communicating in public for prostitution do not pass muster and infringe on the rights of prostitutes.
The court said because prostitution itself is legal in Canada, the three laws made it too difficult for prostitutes to safely engage in sex work.
But, the ruling won't take affect right away. Instead, the court is giving Parliament one year to write new laws regarding the issue.
