Wichita Sales Tax Vote on Hold
WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita City Council will wait until sometime next year to decide on whether to put a local sales tax to a vote. Council members want more input from the public.
The Council discussion came at a strategic planning retreat where members had an opportunity to discuss the direction of the city in depth, including economic development, public transit, and neighborhoods.
Mayor Carl Brewer said the planning session was worthwhile. "It was very fruitful, and certainly education for everyone to find out what councilmen were thinking, areas they may have concern on, and issues they thought were important," said Brewer.
Council members said they want more of these strategy sessions in the future. They are interested in a menu of public improvements that could be funded with a local sales tax, but will wait for input from public engagement meetings on a sales tax before making any decisions.
