Sedgwick Co. Sheriff's Deputy Arrested for Theft

WICHITA - A Sedgwick County sheriff's detention deputy is in custody; KAKE News reports he's accused of stealing an inmate's debit card.
During a briefing Friday morning, Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said it began on August 22 when an inmate was transferred from the jail to work release. When inmates are moved, their property is transferred as well.
Four days after the transfer, the inmate reported that his debit card was missing. Investigators began investigating, finding that the debit card had been used on August 23 at an area business.
Sheriff Easter said the business had security cameras, and that a detention deputy appears in the video on the day in question using the debit card to purchase $50 worth of items. Based on the time stamp, this would have happened about eight hours after the inmate was transferred from the jail to work release.
The deputy was interviewed then arrested Thursday on one count of theft, and one count of criminal use of a financial card.
According to jail records, Robert Shinkle is the deputy who was arrested. He's been with the sheriff's office for six-and-a-half years; formal charges are pending.
