On Demand Crosswalks Now at Most Wichita Schools

WICHITA, Kan.  -  Wichita Drivers no longer have to automatically slow to 20 miles an hour in a school zone. It's all because of the cities relatively new on demand crosswalks.  For the driver's part, they only need to decrease their speed when someone is in a school's crosswalk.
Over the past year 99 crosswalks have made the switch to crosswalks that flash lights with the push of a button. The button triggers a flashing yellow light and changes the traffic light from green to red, signaling for cars to stop.
City engineers say they've made the switch because on-demand crosswalks are safer for children and pedestrians, because they more effectively alert drivers.
Also, the new crosswalks are more efficient.  In an on demand crosswalk a driver does not have to slow down when no one is crossing the street.
