Wichita: $543 Million Budget Approved
WICHITA - The Wichita city council finalized next year's budget at its meeting this week. City Manager Bob Layton says it was a particularly tough budget to put together.
The $543 million budget keeps the property tax mill levy the same for about the 20th year in a row. The spending plan attempts to focus on core city services like police, fire, and other public safety programs.
That includes the Big Ditch -- the floodway around Wichita that's diverting a lot of water right now. Public Works Director Alan King explained how an additional million dollars will be used: "We're engaged in a long-range financial plan, with the County as partners, to be able to put an investment back into the Big Ditch to make sure that it continues to be certified."
Issues to be resolved in the future include arts funding, tipping fees at landfills, and whether to do some updates to Watson Park.
