Early-Morning Storm Floods Cars

WICHITA - Another round of storms caused flooding problems for some drivers in Wichita, as several cars became submerged at intersections. About two inches of rain fell between midnight and dawn Friday morning. That was enough to turn crossroads such as Central and West into small lakes.Police received several calls about drivers stuck in flooded areas. At one point, five cars became submerged at Murdock and Washington in the downtown area. Another driver told KAKE news he tried to drive around high water only to get his car stuck on a hidden rock along the roadside.
One business became flooded as well. Bodycote at Harry and Ida reported about one foot of water, the worst some employees had ever seen.
Westar Energy reported about 1,300 customers in Cowley County lost power as the storm moved through. Their service was quickly restored. Hours earlier, a thunderstorm brought heavy rain and gusty winds to parts of southwest Kansas. Weather service reports indicate two hay buildings lost their roofs in the Hamilton area.
