WICHITA, Kan. - A severe thunderstorm and tornados moved through Wichita and Sedgwick County Sunday afternoon.
Shortly before three o'clock the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Sedwick County. The storm moved in from the southwest and within five minutes the report of funnel clouds in Viola prompted a tornado warning to be issued. Later a storm spotter reported a brief touchdown of a tornado near Clearwater.
The Wichita Weather Services says a tornado touched down near Wichita Mid-Continent Airport shortly before 4 p.m. It was wrapped in rain so it wasn't clear how long it was on the ground. Hail ranging from nickle to golf ball size was reported throughout Wichita with some significant damage. Westar reported about 7600 customers lost power.
There were no reports of major wind damage and no reports of injuries.
