Mulvane High Plans for Random Drug Testing

MULVANE, Kan.  -- The Mulvane Board of Education this week, approved random drug testing at the high school, contingent upon a grant approval.
The district began the conversation about a year ago when parents and community members wanted to learn more about random drug testing at the high school.
After a community survey showed 79% in favor of random drug testing, a committee recommended moving forward with a one-year pilot program.
"From the feedback that we received and the conversations we've had, it didn't surprise me," said Principal Jay Ensley. "It helps solidify the recommendation of the board, that this is something the community feels strongly about."
Students involved in extra-curricular activities, such as sports, and co-curricular activities that involve using the school's parking lot, would be subject to these tests.  For a school with nearly 600 students, that would include about 90% of the student body.
"It's really meant for a preventive measure, a non-punitive measure on the academic side," said Ensley.  Results of the testing would be discussed between the student, parent, and the third party drug testing company. The school has not determined what type of repercussions a student would face if he/she tested positive.
The district is awaiting approval of a $5,000 grant by the City of Mulvane's Alcohol and Drug Prevention Grant funds committee. The city will make a decision no later than May 30th.
If approved, random drug testing will start at Mulvane High School in the Fall of 2013.
