HUTCHINSON, Kan. - A mid-April Winter Storm has caused dozens of accidents and power problems, especially in Reno County. At one point late Tuesday, Reno County reported over 1,000 power outages. By mid-morning Wednesday, that number had been reduced to about a hundred. On the north side of South Hutchinson, two utility poles were ripped from the ground. One snapped in half, while the other was leaning badly. "South Hutch has probably got the biggest issue," said Reno County Emergency Management Director Bill Guy. "They had some power poles come down with a transmission line and about a third of their people were without power. Their sewer plant has been on backup power."
Guy believes this ice buildup rivals the storm of 2007, but says the damage hasn't been as bad, this time, due to the lack of strong winds. "We haven't had a lot of wind, thank goodness," Guy said. "Another thing is, the Westar tree trimming program. I think that has helped mitigate this."
