District Attorney Marc Bennett announced Thursday a program called Initial Assessment Docket.
One attorney from his office has the sole task of reviewing newly charged, eligible cases to determine and present at the first docket call the best deal that can be offered in exchange for a quick resolution if aggreed to by the defense attorney.
Bennet says this is not a program to "give everybody misdemeanors, give everybody disorderly conducts and make it go away". He says the idea is to give them a normal plea opportunity, "as we would do in any other situation" but to so so earlier.
Bennett says the crimes involved are what he called non-personal, that is crimes where no individual was injured. That could include forgeries, drug charges, thefts and such. He adds that everyone benefits from a quick resolution, including the victim.
