WICHITA, Kan. - Following a winter storm that passed through Wichita over the weekend, sand used to treat the roadways remains on the roads. Wichita police are warning motorists that once the snow is gone, the sand remains and can cause problems for area motorcyclists.City crews are working quickly to sweep up the sand they just put down over the weekend during the snow storm. "What we have to do now is pick up all that sand because it reduces traction during dry weather," said city street and maintenance supervisor Terry Nicholas.
Crews began sweeping up the sand Monday night, working during hours where there is little traffic. "We're basically starting over again," said Nicholas. "Hope it won't take as much time this time around."
With the temperatures expected to warm up later this week, Wichita Police are asking riders to be careful. "We've seen accidents before where they have caught sand, starting or stopping and they laid the bike down," said Lt. Joe Schroeder.
The city says it will take six to eight weeks to get all the sand from this latest storm cleaned up.
