Tax Tip: Get Your Refund in Days, Not Weeks

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- About 80 percent of tax filers will be getting a refund this year.  Want to get that payout quicker?  File electronically, experts say.

"If you use off-the-shelf software, or online software, or go to a paid preparer, in most cases, you can choose electronic filing," says Eric Smith with the Internal Revenue Service.

Bob Meighan with tax prep firm TurboTax says e-filing really speeds up when you'll see your money.

"If you're going to mail your return in, you can expect a processing period of four to eight weeks, versus less than 21 days, so it's a dramatic difference," he says.

Want your refund even faster?  Tax preparer Janice Hayman suggests that you choose direct deposit, so the IRS can put the money right into your bank account.

"Direct deposit can insure a refund within about 14 days," she says.

Direct deposit may also reduce the risk of a stolen check.  The IRS says e-filing is safe and secure.
