Kansans to Benefit from Toyota Settlement
TOPEKA, Kan. - Kansans who owned Toyota vehicles between 2009 and 2010 may be eligible for restitution under a recent settlement, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said Friday.
Kansas, along with 28 other states, recently entered into an agreement with Toyota Motor Corporation to resolve allegations the company misrepresented safety issues regarding unintended acceleration on certain Toyota and Lexus vehicles. While the safety issues with the accelerators was addressed through a recall, this settlement requires Toyota to provide additional reimbursement to consumers who encountered out-of-pocket expenses, such as rental cars or towing, as a result of the safety issues.
The settlement also requires Toyota to provide scientific backing for safety claims in advertising and more fully cooperate with regulatory agencies. “Kansas drivers are entitled to complete and timely information about any safety issues that may affect their vehicles,” Schmidt said. “We are encouraged by this settlement and remain committed to keeping Kansans safe on the road.”
Consumers who wish to request reimbursements may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus at 1-800-255-3987. They may also contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-432-2310 or www.ag.ks.gov.
