Suspect Steals Pregnant Woman's Minivan
WICHITA - A driver is in custody after a police pursuit that covered several miles, reaching speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour in southwest Wichita.
The victim was a pregnant woman with labor pains whose car was warming up in her driveway as she was getting ready to go to the hospital. A Sedgwick County Sheriff's deputy began chasing the stolen minivan at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Forty minutes later the vehicle was stopped near Harry & Seneca after the driver ran over stop-sticks in the roadway ... losing three tires and two rims during the chase; the van was so damaged the front wheel shattered, grinding the brakes down to the axle.
The suspect, a 36-year-old man, had several warrants out for his arrest, and had violated probation; he was paroled on a robbery conviction three months ago.
As for the mother: it was a false alarm -- she was hospitalized, then went back home.
