BELLE PLAINE, Kan. - Belle Plaine Police have identified the man they say pretended to be a sheriff's deputy in an attempt to cash a fake check Monday.The department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are looking for Robert Wayne Helms, 45, of Pittsburg, Kan. He is described as a person of interest in the attempted forgeries in Belle Plaine as well as several other forgery cases across Kansas.
According to Kansas Department of Corrections Records, Helms absconded in November. He had been paroled following a 2011 theft conviction. Helms has been in and out of prison since 1986. He has several past forgery and worthless check convictions as well as a kidnapping conviction, according to records.
Helms was last seen in southeast Kansas, the release said. He has contacted law enforcement and stated he is on the run. Helms should be considered armed and dangerous.
