He says it all began earlier in the evening, when police pulled over what they believed to be a stolen Camaro west of Broadway & Mt. Vernon. As the officers got out of their car, the Camaro took off at a high rate of speed, leading to a chase. The pursuit lasted for a few minutes, with speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Police lost track of the vehicle near 27th Street South & St. Paul. A few minutes later, the car was found unoccupied south of Pawnee & Meridian.
About four hours later, a 64-year-old woman living nearby reported a burglary-in-progress at her home in the 2500 block of W. Dallas. Police encountered the suspect in the back yard; the suspect ran around an unattached garage, and police split up around the garage. When the first officer encountered the man, the suspect fired at least one shot from a handgun, and the police officer returned fire, striking the suspect three times.
The suspect, a 31-year-old man, was hospitalized in serious condition, undergoing surgery. The suspect has an extensive criminal history, and had a federal warrant out for his arrest; he was recently indicted on a weapons violation.
