Stocks Inch Higher as Investors Look Toward Next Week's Earnings Reports

Hemera/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- U.S. Stocks turned higher Friday just before the closing bell.

The Dow closed up 17 points at 13,488.43. The Nasdaq earned four points for the session, closing at 3,125.63. However, the S&P was off a fraction of a point Friday. The index closed at 1,472.05.

The markets moved in a narrow range for much of the session, with investors looking ahead to the earnings reports which are expected next week.

The U.S. deficit is on track to reach a trillion dollars for the fifth year in a row, despite a jump in tax revenue in December, as people paid some taxes early to beat increases in 2013.  The actual size of the annual deficit will hinge, in part, on how Congress and the White House resolve a debate over raising the nation's borrowing limit.
