WICHITA - The United States Air Force has announced that McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita and Forbes Airfield in Topeka have both been chosen as finalists for the KC-46A tanker program.
McConnell is a finalists for the Main Operating Base (MOB#1), and the Formal Training Unit; Forbes is a finalist for the Main Operating Base (MOB#2).
McConnell is in competition against Altus AFB in Oklahoma, Fairchild AFB in West Virginia, and Grand Forks AFB in North Dakota.
The Air Force will make its final decision at a future date.
The Air Force is in the process of transitioning from the 50-year-old KC-135 tankers, to the new models. Fairchild Air Force Base in West Virginia is also among the finalists.
Starting in 2016, the base selected as MOB#1 will house three dozen active-duty KC-46A tankers.
