KU To Drop Duplicate Honors Program

LAWRENCE, Kan - The University of Kansas is ditching an honors program for freshmen because officials found it duplicates another program.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the Mount Oread Scholars program will come to an end after this school year. The program was designed to help participants adjust to college.

Officials plan to fill the void by expanding the University Honors Program.

Senior vice provost for academic affairs Sara Rosen says it makes more sense to have one campus entity dedicated to helping high-ability students succeed, rather than two. She said it was "very, very confusing having two different honors-like programs running parallel."

But some who've worked with the Mount Oread Scholars program say it has served a different niche than the Honors Program.
