WICHITA, Kan. - It was a close call for a Wichita police officer who crashed her patrol car after swerving to miss hitting a dead deer left in the roadway. It happened around 4:00 Sunday morning near K-96 and Oliver.
Authorities say the officer was eastbound on K-96 when she saw a large object in the road, which turned out to be a deer that had been hit previously.
When the officer swerved to miss the deer, her patrol car entered the median, spun out and struck the center cable barrier.
The officer was not hurt, but the vehicle had to be taken out of service.
Police urge drivers to use caution during the late evening and early morning hours and to report all accidents involving deer.
