Wichita, Kan. - A new solid waste and recycling plan goes into effect in Wichita. The City of Wichita revamped its solid waste and recycling program, with changes aimed at reducing costs and offering more services.
Last year, the city began working with residents and local haulers to address issues related to recycling and waste. They looked at issues surrounding limited recycling options and the increase of waste at local disposal sites such as landfills.Once options were discussed and the new program was approved by the city council, haulers were given one year to make the changes, which go into effect next week.
Beginning Thursday, all local trash haulers will be required to offer single-stream curbside recycling, where no sorting is required and discarded recyclable items can be mixed together.
In addition, haulers must provide smaller trash containers for residents who don't throw as much away, and they must do so at a reduced price. A new web page will also be launched on the city's website allowing customers to shop around and look at various haulers' prices and services.
