Woman Killed, Two Hurt In Train Collision

WALTON, Kan. - A Kansas woman was killed and two others were seriously hurt when their car crashed into a train in Harvey County. It happened just before 12:15 p.m. Saturday at Northeast 48th Street and U.S. 50, about a mile southwest of Walton.
Harvey County Sheriff officials say the 19-year-old woman was driving northbound on Northeast 48th Street when she struck a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train that was traveling eastbound.
The woman died at the scene. Her 20-year-old husband was flown to a Wichita hospital in critical condition. Her 17-year-old brother was taken to a Wichita hospital by ambulance with serious injuries.
Investigators are working to determine what caused the woman to drive into the train. They say the railroad crossing did not have flashing lights or gates.
All of the victims were Harvey County residents. Their names have not been released pending family notifications.
