DERBY, Kan. - Crews have recovered a body from the burned-out wreckage of a home in south-central Kansas.
The fire southeast of Derby was reported by a passerby shortly before 2 a.m. Monday in the 10000 block of E. 87th Street South, near Greenwich Road. Sedgwick County Fire District Division Chief Doug Williams the flames were visible from several miles away, and firefighters were unable to get inside.
Fire crews from several municipalities were on the scene, including Sedgwick County, Derby, Rose Hill, Mulvane, and McConnell Air Force Base. There were no fire hydrants in the area, so water had to be shuttled in to battle the blaze.
The roof caved in; it was a two-story, 3,000-square-foot home. Crews brought in construction equipment to locate the victim and clear the debris.
