Illegal Street Race Reaches 100 MPH, Ends in Crash

WICHITA, Kan.  -  A young driver rolled his car Monday during an illegal street race on Maple Street near Towne West Square mall in west Wichita.  It happened around 10:00 a.m. near Maple and Clara.
Witnesses told police they saw the two cars racing beginning near Maple and Maze.  An off-duty Butler County sheriff's deputy just happened to be in the area and witnessed the vehicles going around 100 miles per hour in the opposite direction.
One of the cars, a red sports car, was able to avoid hitting a car that pulled out onto Maple, and left the scene.  But, but the other vehicle, a silver Trans Am swerved and struck a curb.  It rolled and came to rest in the front yard of a residence.  The driver, 18, was not seriously injured and was ticketed for his role in the accident.  The other driver has not been found.
