WICHITA, Kan. - Power outages were reported across Wichita and Derby, temporarily closing offices at Youthville, Murdock Tag Office in downtown Wichita, and The American Red Cross.
The Southside campus for Wichita Area Technical College closed Friday due to the power outage. However, the National Center for Aviation Training and Grove Campuses remain open.
Drivers in southeast Wichita not only had to deal with slick roads during the morning commute, but also drove on K-15 from Derby without traffic lights. Power lines were also reported down on Kellogg near Webb Road and Greenwich around 10:30 a.m.
A spokeswoman for Westar Energy said downed power lines near Derby are to blame for the outages. She also said that anytime the area experiences a long dry spell, followed by rain, outages will occur. The sudden surge of moisture in the air can cause equipment to malfunction.
Most of the power in Derby was restored by 10:00 a.m. But, areas in Wichita were without power for much longer.
