Corps to Continue Reservoir Releases

TOPEKA, Kan.  -  The Army Corps of Engineers will continue releasing water from three Kansas reservoirs despite a request from Gov. Sam Brownback to stop doing so.
The Corps began the releases from the Milford, Perry and Tuttle Creek reservoirs July 8 and said Thursday they'll continue until approximately Aug. 7.  Brownback wanted the releases halted to help increase water resources in the drought-plagued state. But the Corps said they're needed to provide navigation support on the Missouri River. The agency says it's required by federal regulations to help control the Missouri to avoid harming two species of endangered birds.
Also Thursday, the Kansas Water Office clarified Brownback's order allowing farmers and communities to pump water from state fishing lakes. The office says anyone wishing to do so must get its permission first.
