WICHITA - The Sedgwick County Commission has held the first of three public hearings on next year's budget. One of the big issues was the proposed closure of the Judge Ridell Boys Ranch at Lake Afton.
Dr. Delores Craig, who is retired from Wichita State, argued the ranch is very cost effective; she said 25% of boys who go through the Judge Ridell program get back into trouble, compared to an average of 75% in juvenile programs nationwide. She also said the county gets $21 back for every dollar it spends at the ranch.
The comments came at a public hearing on the proposed budget. Two more hearings will be held before the County Commission sets the budget.
