Fire Burns Apartment Building, Displaces Residents

WICHITA, Kan.  -  A number of residents at a northwest Wichita apartment complex were left without a place to stay after their building was damaged by fire.  The fire started around 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Silver Springs apartment complex in the 900 block of North Silver Springs Boulevard near Central Avenue and Ridge Road.
Officials say the fire started on the second-floor balcony of one apartment and spread into the attic.  Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control and keep it from spreading to nearby buildings. No injuries were reported.
In addition to the one unit burned by the fire, officials on the scene say the other 15 apartments in the building were damaged by smoke, heat and water.  Investigators estimate the total damage at $75,000 to the structure and $25,000 to the contents.
Investigators say the resident who lived in the apartment where the fire started was not home at the time.  Red Cross workers responded to the scene and helped residents find shelter for the night. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
