WICHITA - Two cars collided on Tuesday evening at Edgemoor & Mt. Vernon, and a girl in the back seat of the car that was hit died at the scene; she's the first child to die this year in a Wichita traffic accident.
Police say an 18-year-old man was speeding west-bound on Mt. Vernon in an Acura, going about 65 miles per hour in 35 mile-per-hour zone. The victim's mother was driving a Fusion, coming into the intersection from Edgemoor.
The impact occurred at the rear passenger door of the Fusion, killing six-year-old Fedora Two-Hatchett; her one-year-old sister was also in the back seat, and survived. Both girls were property restrained.
There are conflicting witness reports about whether or not the girl's mother had stopped at the stop sign on Edgemoor.
This is Wichita's ninth traffic fatality of the year; there had already been 18 at this time last year.
