WICHITA - Legal fireworks go on sale in Wichita on Wednesday, running through July 5. During those dates, fireworks may be shot off between 6:00 a.m. through midnight.
In 2010, Wichita recorded only $1,000 in fireworks-related damage. But in 2011, that total skyrocketed to $118,000, as part of four fireworks-related fires.
Last year on July 4th, some people calling 9-1-1 for emergencies were unable to get through, because the phone lines were clogged with 1,200 non-emergency fireworks complaints. This year, officials are setting up a non-emergency phone number that will be in place from 4:30 p.m. on July 4th through 3:00 a.m. July 5th. That non-emergency number will be 290-1011.
