MOLINE, Kan. - A 126-year-old Kansas church has been destroyed by fire. Elk County officials say the Christian Church in the 400 block of North Main Street in Moline burned to the ground Friday morning.
The fire was reported at approximately 2:45 a.m. Fire Chief Rob Wolfe says firefighters arrived at the scene to find the church engulfed in flames. Firefighters from Elk County, Howard and Granola responded and were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures. Wolfe says there is very little left of the building and it is a total loss. There were no injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Pastor Stan Rumbough say neighbors tell him the church bell tower was struck by lightning. The church, built in 1886, was home to a congregation of 40 people. Rumbough says this Sunday's service will be held at the American Legion.
