Coffeyville refinery agrees to fine, pollution controls

Former Consultant to the Refinery
I worked onsite at the refinery in the late 70's early 80's. At that time there were many improvements being made including stack sampling for and systems installed to control emissions. The refinery was aged at that time and now over thirty years later there are penalties assessed by the administration which killed the Keystone pipeline project and the much needed jobs and by liberals who have denied any new refinery construction efforts and regulated oil from emotional hatred instead of reason and logic. Coffeyville Refinery must always be diligent re: pollution controls and being a "good neighbor". I have no knowledge of the current state of the refinery but I suspect it to be in need of improvement being predictably lost in the bureaucracy and red tape. We need oil and we need refineries and we need an administration committed to cutting red tape and regulation while maintaining realistic emissions standards. The tourniquet applied to stem emissions is more like a noose tightening around the neck of the economy. The treatment administered to the patient will not save and the patient will die but the air and water surrounding the corpse will be pristine. We must find a balance. The religions of "radical environmentalism" and "capitalism at all costs" must find a place to coexist. But like the religious COEXIST bumper sticker we've all seen, all one must do to realize the impossibility is to read the sacred texts. It cannot possibly happen. I hope we find a balance. Green energy is non existent and less sustainable than oil unless we are all willing to return to an early 18th century lifestyle. Reason and logic have gone and the inmates are running the asylum. I'm from Greensburg, Kansas and the wind farm south of town sends all it's energy out of state. Greensburg doesn't benefit but is simply a political tool to convince us of a better world that doesn't exist but we are being told that it can if we will all just sacrifice a bit more (read: relinquish freedoms). No thanks.
