NEWTON, Kan. (KNSS) – Fire crews in Harvey County were called to the scene of a fire in a structure next to a grain elevator.  The fire began in a building on the Co-Op campus in the 1900 block of North Main in North Newton, at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Fire officials say the blaze was called under control by 9:30 p.m., however, flair ups continued to take place.

KSN News says the affected structure was a storage building, filled with compressed materials used for recycling.

Fire crews from Newton, Halstead, and Hesston worked together to bring the blaze under control.  "Firefighters had to take a defensive position outside the building," said spokeswoman Erin McDaniel with the City of Newton.

People living near the elevator were pushed back as a safety precaution in case there was an explosion.  However, the fire remained contained to the adjacent building, and didn't affect the grain elevator.

There were no injuries, and no hazardous materials were involved in the blaze.  Fire crews remained on the scene through the night.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
