Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School senior Mackenzie Smith has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Wichita Wagonmasters. The award was presented to Mackenzie in a surprise visit by the Wagonmasters and Admiral Windwagon Smith to her classroom at KMC.
The Wichita Wagonmasters were formed in 1974 as a support group for the Wichita River Festival, promoting and selling the good things about Wichita. Now 200 members strong, its membership spans various professions in the business, public, and private sectors.
To insure the values of the organization and to help build a healthy social and civic community, it created a scholarship in 2003, awarded each year to a high school senior who has demonstrated a desire to make Wichita a strong social and civic community.
Mackenzie Smith is the recipient of this year’s scholarship award because of her leadership and motivation to assist when called upon.
She has been active as a Catholic Youth Organization member for four years, and an officer for two years.
Her community service includes work at the Lord’s Diner, Saint Anthony Shelter, Catholic Charities, and Meals on Wheels.
Mackenzie will be able to use her $5,000 scholarship to defray her costs of attending Kansas State University next year. |
