Voters in Kingman County Again Reject Sales Tax for New Jail

KINGMAN, Kan.  -  Voters in Kingman County have rejected a 1% sales tax increase to pay for a new law enforcement center that would include a new jail.

The unofficial vote total was 772 to 678, with 11 provisional votes cast. The Kingman County Clerk's Office says that would not be enough to sway the vote in favor of the new facility.

Officials say about 26% of registered voters in Kingman County turned out to the polls Tuesday. The county has been working since 2010 to build a new law enforcement center.

The current law enforcement center was originally built in 1959 and does not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. It was also built on a flood plain.

The jail at the facility only contains enough space to house 13 inmates. Voters rejected a similar proposal in October of last year.
